QUJ e QTE sul piano QUJ and QTE on the plane
Poi nascondi i valori e allenati. Two norths on the same plane: the true rose follows the grid, the magnetic rose is turned by the variation. Place the aircraft, turn the heading, read the cockpit instruments and work out QUJ and QTE. Then hide the figures and drill.
If QDM and QDR are not automatic yet, start from the QDM and QDR on the plane page.
Due nord, quattro sigle Two norths, four Q codes
The direction of the aircraft → station line measured from true north. It is the QDM corrected for variation: the one you plot on the chart.
The station → aircraft line extended to the true rose. It is the reciprocal of the QUJ and the position line you draw on the chart.
Measured from magnetic north, the one the compass and the DI use. They are what the instruments give you directly: QDM = MH + RB.
The angle between true and magnetic north, read off the chart's isogonic line. East lies right of true north, West left. It is the only bridge between the two pairs of codes.
QDM = MH + RB
QUJ = QDM + Var E
QUJ = QDM − Var W
QTE = QUJ ± 180°
All angles are taken modulo 360. From magnetic to true, East variation is added and West is subtracted; from true to magnetic the other way round. The same step links the heading: TH = MH + Var E, so QUJ = TH + RB holds as well.
Il piano e gli strumenti The plane and the instruments
The station sits at the origin and the grid, in nautical miles, is aligned to true north: the outer rose marks true degrees, the inner one magnetic degrees, turned by the variation. Drag the aircraft to move it, drag the tip of the heading line to turn it, or use the controls. Below the plane the three cockpit instruments read the same situation. In Exercise mode the figures stay hidden until you check them.

Tolerance ±2°: the plane is read by eye, as on a chart. In the exercises MH and RB are multiples of 5° and the variation is a whole number, as in exam problems.
Dagli strumenti alla carta From the instruments to the chart
MH from the DI and RB from the ADF. These are the only two cockpit readings: the DI gives the magnetic heading, the RBI needle the angle from the nose to the station, clockwise.
- 02 QDM = MH + RB, modulo 360. QDM = MH + RB, modulo 360. With an RMI the sum is already done: the needle head reads it on the rotating card. The QDR is the tail, that is the reciprocal.
It is the step from compass north to chart north, and it works the same way for the heading: TH = MH + Var E.
- 04 QTE = QUJ ± 180. QTE = QUJ ± 180. This is the line you plot on the chart: it leaves the station, crosses the true rose at the QTE, and the aircraft is somewhere along it. On the plane you find it by extending station → aircraft to the outer rose.
Cross-check: the same station → aircraft line meets the magnetic rose (inner) at the QDR. The two readings must differ by exactly the variation. If they do not, you got the sign of Var wrong.
