Ortodromia e Lossodromia Great Circle and Rhumb Line Routes
Two ways to draw a route on the Earth's sphere: the shortest path (great circle) and the constant-bearing path (rhumb line). Interactive 3D globe with meridians and parallels.

Ortodromia - Cerchio Massimo Great Circle - Orthodromic Route
The intersection of the Earth's sphere with a plane through the Earth's centre. It is the shortest path between two points on the sphere. The bearing changes continuously along the route, except along the equator or meridians.
Lossodromia - Rotta a Prua Costante Rhumb Line - Constant Bearing Route
A line that crosses every meridian at the same angle: you fly holding a constant compass bearing. On the sphere it is a spiral that tends toward the poles; it is always equal to or longer than the great circle.
Perché non coincidono Why They Differ
The sphere is curved: holding a constant bearing (rhumb line) is not the shortest path, except along the equator, meridians, or over short distances where the difference is negligible. The longer and more east-west the route, the larger the divergence.
Uso pratico in navigazione Practical Navigation Use
For short/medium-range VFR flights the two routes are nearly indistinguishable, so rhumb line planning is used (constant bearing, convenient on chart and compass). For oceanic/intercontinental flights (airliners) the great circle is followed to save time and fuel, broken into constant-bearing legs.

Errori ComuniCommon Errors
- ✗ Pensare che una retta tracciata su una carta di Mercatore sia sempre la rotta più breve - è la lossodromica, non l'ortodromica Thinking a straight line drawn on a Mercator chart is always the shortest route - it is the rhumb line, not the great circle
- ✗ Credere che l'ortodromica abbia una prua costante - cambia continuamente lungo il percorso Believing the great circle has a constant bearing - it changes continuously along the route
- ✗ Ignorare la differenza su rotte brevi/VFR, dove è trascurabile, ma applicarla erroneamente anche su rotte lunghe est-ovest ad alta latitudine, dove diventa significativa Ignoring the difference on short VFR routes, where it is negligible, while wrongly assuming it stays negligible on long east-west routes at high latitude, where it becomes significant
- ✗ Confondere la lossodromia con la rotta più corta in assoluto - è solo la più semplice da volare Confusing the rhumb line with the absolute shortest route - it is only the simplest to fly
Note AvanzateAdvanced Notes
Composite planning: On long oceanic routes the great circle is often split into several legs (way-points), each flown as a constant-bearing rhumb line - a compromise between minimum distance and ease of flying, used historically before continuous GPS/INS navigation.
Mercator projection: A conformal (angle-preserving) cylindrical projection - that's why the rhumb line, which crosses every meridian at a constant angle, appears as a straight line. The cost is strong area distortion at high latitudes (e.g. Greenland appears huge).
Magnitude of the difference: For short routes or routes near the equator, great circle and rhumb line are nearly identical. The divergence grows with distance and with the east-west component at high latitude - it is largest on routes like London-Tokyo or Lisbon-Tokyo, where the great circle passes close to the North Pole.
