Upwind, crosswind, downwind, base and final: five legs named after the wind but drawn on the runway. Change the wind and watch what moves and what stays put.

- 75 kt
The aeroplane always flies at 75 kt true airspeed: watch ground speed rise on downwind and fall on final. The dashed line is the ground track; the nose moves to compensate for drift.
At an aerodrome without radar control, or with mixed traffic, everyone has to know where the others are without asking. The traffic circuit is a fixed, repeatable route, the same for everybody, that starts and ends on the runway in use.
The runway in use is the one that gives a headwind on landing: a headwind lowers ground speed at touchdown and shortens the ground roll. The circuit is drawn around that runway, and the legs are named after how the wind meets them when the wind is aligned with the runway.
That is why the names are both exact and misleading: they describe an ideal situation, wind down the runway, and stay the same when the real wind is something else.

SopravventoUpwind
upwind, tratto di decollo, a volte detto «controvento»departure leg, take-off leg
After take-off you climb along the extended centreline, on the same track as the runway. With the runway chosen into wind, the air comes from ahead: hence «upwind», towards the wind. You carry on straight until the local procedure lets you turn, normally past the end of the runway and at a safe height.

TraversoCrosswind
A 90° turn (to the left in the standard circuit) and a climb to circuit height. The wind comes from the side. In Italian this leg is the «traverso»; the word «controvento» is used inconsistently, see the vocabulary traps below.

SottoventoDownwind
downwind, tratto in codadownwind leg
Level at circuit height (typically 1000 ft AAL) on a track parallel to the runway and opposite to the landing direction. The wind is behind you: the highest ground speed of the lap. Here you check the runway, reduce power, run the pre-landing checks and make your call.

A 90° turn when the threshold is roughly 45° behind the wing. You start to descend and configure. The wind is across again, but from the opposite side to the crosswind leg: correct for drift without overshooting the extended centreline.

Con il vento e contro il vento: stessa aria, due tempi With the wind and against it: same air, two times
Upwind means flying towards the wind, with a headwind. Downwind means flying with the wind, with a tailwind. Two identical aeroplanes set off together over 2 NM, one in each direction.

Entrambi gli aeroplani fanno 75 kt rispetto all'aria. The blue lines are the air: it moves to the right at wind speed. Both aeroplanes make 75 kt through the air. Over the ground, one gains the wind and the other pays for it. The simulation runs at 18× real time.
Lato sopravvento e lato sottovento Windward and leeward sides
In the general sense, windward is the side the wind comes from and leeward the side it blows towards. It is the same word used at sea and in the mountains.
Behind a ridge, on the leeward side, the air sinks and rolls up into rotors: turbulence and downdraughts make the lee of a ridge the side to avoid at low level.
In the circuit, «upwind» and «downwind» do not name a side: they name the direction you fly relative to the wind, and the ideal one at that.

Literally «controvento» is «against the wind», so upwind, and that is how many instructors use it. Some texts, however, use it for the crosswind leg. There is no single convention: this page therefore calls the second leg «traverso» and mentions «controvento» only as a variant. On the radio and in written instructions the English term removes any doubt.

With wind from 090° at 15 kt, the downwind leg of runway 36 sees an almost pure crosswind, yet it is still called downwind. The name describes geometry; the real component is read off the windsock and felt on the rudder. The simulator above shows it under the readouts.

Mano del circuito non è lato del ventoCircuit direction is not the wind side
«Left-hand» or «right-hand» says which side of the runway you stay on, not where the wind blows from. The choice depends on obstacles, noise and neighbouring circuits. Unless stated otherwise, turns are to the left.

Il primo tratto cambia nome da un testo all'altroThe first leg changes name between texts
Upwind, take-off leg, departure leg: all the same leg, along the runway extension after take-off. Some texts omit it and start from crosswind. When in doubt the sequence is what counts: runway, crosswind, downwind, base, final.

Informarsi prima di arrivareGet the picture before you arrive
Runway in use, circuit direction and height come from ATIS, the information service or the windsock. You arrive with a clear picture of where the others are.
- 02
Avvicinarsi a 45° dall'esternoApproach at 45° from outside
You arrive at circuit height, from the side away from the runway, aiming at the downwind leg at 45° abeam the middle of the runway. From outside you see the whole circuit before entering it.
- 03
Inserirsi nel flusso, dietroSlot into the flow, behind
You turn in the direction of the circuit and fall in behind the traffic already there, with proper spacing. Make your downwind call and carry on like everyone else.
The 45° join is the common scheme, but some aerodromes prescribe an overhead join or dedicated entry points. Again, the published procedure applies.
Cosa cambia con il ventoWhat the wind changes
40 s / 60 s
At 75 kt with a 15 kt wind along the runway, 1 NM of downwind is 90 kt and 40 s, 1 NM of final is 60 kt and 60 s. The same leg, stretched or shrunk by a third by the wind.
hdg ≠ trk
DerivaDrift
With a crosswind the nose is held into the wind to keep the track, as the simulator shows with the aeroplane rotated off the dashed line. On downwind the wind pushes you towards the runway or away from it: correct to stay parallel.
90° → 90°
Virata base-finaleBase-to-final turn
If on base the wind pushes you towards the centreline, the risk is overshooting final; if it pushes you away, falling short of it. The cure is not a tighter turn with more bank at low level, but turning earlier, later, or going around.
