Altimetro e Variazioni di Pressione Altimeter and Pressure Changes
The altimeter is a barometer with a feet scale. Holding a constant indicated altitude really means holding a constant static pressure: the aircraft slides along an isobar, which sinks into a low and rises into a high. The needle, meanwhile, does not move.
Concetti chiave Key concepts
The aneroid capsules sense static pressure only. The mechanism converts it to a height through the ISA law, counting from the pressure dialled into the Kollsman window. The altimeter has no idea what the sea-level pressure beneath you is: it only knows the one you told it.
Near sea level the pressure drops by 1 hPa every 27 ft or so (8 m). In the cockpit that rounds to 30 ft. Ten hPa between the set QNH and the real one are worth 270 ft of error, always in the direction of the pressure.
From high to low pressure the isobaric surface sinks and the aircraft with it: you are lower than you read. From low to high you are higher. Temperature does the same: from warm to cold, lower.
hindicata = HISA(pstatica) − HISA(QNHimpostato)
hvera ≈ HISA(pstatica) − HISA(QNHreale)
→ errore = hvera − hindicata ≈ 27 ft × (QNHreale − QNHimpostato). QNH reale più basso di quello impostato: errore negativo, sei sotto. hindicated = HISA(pstatic) − HISA(QNHset)
htrue ≈ HISA(pstatic) − HISA(QNHreal)
→ error = htrue − hindicated ≈ 27 ft × (QNHreal − QNHset). Real QNH lower than the set one: negative error, you are below.
The pilot holds the indicated altitude (red dashed line) with the departure QNH in the window. Along the route the real QNH changes to the destination value and the aircraft follows its isobar (blue line). Raise or lower altitude, pressures and temperature with the controls, move the aircraft along and watch what happens at the ridge.
Dials in the QNH of the area you are in now: the error vanishes and the pilot brings the aircraft back to the planned altitude.

Che cosa può succedere What can happen
Da alta a bassa pressioneFrom high to low pressure
The isobar sinks, the aircraft with it, the needle stays put. You are lower than you think, and no instrument on board shows it.
Obstacles: the ridge you planned to cross with 500 ft to spare is 40 ft above you. At night, in haze or with the ridge in cloud you never see it coming: the classic CFIT scenario, controlled flight into terrain.
Minimum safe altitude: the 1,000 ft above the highest obstacle (2,000 ft in mountains) you worked out in planning erode without you touching the yoke.
Airspace and VFR minima: you can drop below an airspace floor, or below the 500 ft / 1,000 ft surface minima, without noticing.
Circuit and approach: you arrive with a stale QNH, join the circuit at the "right" altitude and sit lower than the traffic that has the current one.
The isobar rises and the aircraft with it. You are higher than you think. Toward the terrain the error works in your favour, but it is not free.
- ▸Spazio aereo sopra di te: il soffitto di una TMA o di un CTR che pensavi di stare sotto è già stato attraversato: infrazione di spazio aereo e conflitto con traffico IFR.Airspace above you: the TMA or CTR floor you thought you were under has already been crossed: an airspace infringement and a conflict with IFR traffic.
Cleared level: "maintain 3,500 ft" read on your altimeter is not the altitude the controller sees, who has the correct QNH.
Cloud: VFR cloud clearance is measured in true altitude: you can find yourself poking into a base the altimeter still placed above you.
Approach: you arrive high on the circuit and on final, tempted to "fix it" in a hurry.
E la temperatura fa lo stesso giocoAnd temperature plays the same game
"From hot to cold, look out below." The altimeter converts pressure into altitude assuming an ISA air column. Colder air is denser: the same pressure is reached lower down. About 4% of altitude per 10 °C below ISA, so at 5,000 ft with ISA −20 °C you are 400 ft lower than you read, even with a perfectly current QNH. The QNH corrects the sea-level pressure only, not the shape of the column. "From hot to cold, look out below."
Accorgimenti Precautions
Update the QNH at every area change. Ask the FIS you are in contact with, listen to the ATIS of the airports you overfly, take it from the tower when entering a CTR. A QNH is valid within its altimeter setting region: past that, it is an old number.
Plan with the lowest QNH forecast along the route. The regional QNH is by definition the lowest forecast in the area for the hour: with it set, if you are wrong you are wrong on the high side, which is the safe side. Read departure, en-route and destination METARs and TAFs: if pressure falls along the route, add margin to the minimum altitude.
Use a real minimum safe altitude, not an optimistic one. Highest obstacle within 5 NM of track + 1,000 ft (2,000 ft in mountains), rounded up. Then correct for pressure (30 ft per hPa of forecast drop) and temperature (4% per 10 °C below ISA). With the ridge in cloud or at night that margin is all you have.
When you reset, expect the needle to jump and correct the altitude. If the new QNH is lower the reading drops: climb back to the planned altitude. If it is higher the reading rises: descend. Do not "chase" the needle by turning the knob until it lands on the number you like.
Above the transition altitude, everybody on 1013. Flying levels, everyone shares the same error, so separation between aircraft holds even though the true altitude differs from the nominal one. That is what the transition layer is for: below it you fly QNH for terrain separation, above it the standard setting for aircraft separation.
Cross-check with what you see and with the GPS, knowing what each measures. GPS altitude is geometric: it ignores pressure and temperature, and a discrepancy of hundreds of feet from the altimeter is a warning bell about the QNH. It is not, however, the altitude you fly and separate on: you keep flying the altimeter, updated.
In doubt, climb. If you are unsure of the QNH in an area with obstacles or reduced visibility, the extra altitude costs a few minutes of fuel. The missing altitude cannot be bought back.
Computed with the ISA law for an indicated altitude of 4,000 ft. The "rule" column uses the cockpit 30 ft per hPa: it slightly overestimates, which is the right way round.

Errori comuniCommon mistakes
Thinking the altimeter "feels" the pressure change and corrects itself: it feels it all right, but reads it as an altitude change. If you hold the indication, you are the one cancelling the reading by really descending or climbing.
Getting the sign backwards: a real QNH lower than the set one means a lower aircraft. Memorise "high to low, look out below" and check with the simulator above: the aircraft goes where the pressure goes.
Believing 1013 is "safe" below the transition altitude: with the standard setting the reading is a pressure altitude, not a height above the sea. With QNH 995 you would be 490 ft lower than you read, among the hills.
Mixing up pressure error and temperature error: the first is cleared by updating the QNH, the second is not. On a cold day with a perfect QNH you are still lower, and the two add up when the low is also cold, which it often is.
Trusting the "favourable" error: from low to high pressure the terrain is farther away, but the airspace ceiling above you is closer. An error is an error.
